Orchid Island is a 45-km² volcanic island off the eastern coast of Taiwan in the Pacific. It is governed as Lanyu Township of Taitung County of Taiwan Province, Republic of China. The island is the homeland to the Tao Taiwanese aborigines (also known as the Yami people), who call the island Ponso no Tao ("the island where we live"; also spelt Pongso no Tao). The island is also known as Botel Tobago.
Orchid Island is home to some of the best diving in Taiwan it has year round diving with excellent vis usually 30m to 50m. It is a coastal fringing reef but has walls and drop offs in some places. Large animals (whales, dolphins and mantas)can be seen here at certain times.
On most dives you can be sure to see turtles, sea snakes, various species of morays, large reef fish, cuttlefish, squid, barracuda and flying fish. The island has excellent soft and hard coral growth and also has a beautiful wreck (old Korean freighter) [bottom 33m top 10m]covered in soft and hard corals and crinoids. There are a couple of great shore dives and excellent night diving.
